Samuel Eto'o was elected president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fécafoot) this Saturday, December 11 in Yaoundé against Seidou Mbombo Njoya, the former boss of Fécafoot.

The former African football superstar will have to redress an institution in crisis since 2013. His mandate will begin with the African Cup of Nations (CAN 2021) organized in his country.

I will remember today as one of the proudest moments of my life.

At 40, Samuel Eto'o has had many victories during his football career. But that of this December 11, 2021 is apart: this Saturday in Yaoundé, the ex-superstar of African football has indeed imposed itself on the political field. He was elected president of the Cameroonian Federation (Fécafoot). “

Each vote represents the energy and ambition of our football family to bring our beloved sport to a level we have never seen before,

 ” added Eto'o.

He preceded the ex-boss of Fécafoot Seidou Mbombo Njoya by 43 votes to 31. The latter has not yet officially commented on his defeat on social networks.

But the 4th vice-president of the African Football Confederation (CAF) welcomed the result calmly, congratulating Samuel Eto'o.

Reforming a Fécafoot in crisis

Eto'o, double winner of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) with the Cameroon team (2000, 2002), is now tackling a major challenge: reforming an institution in crisis since 2013 and the dismissal of Mohammed Iya, sentenced in 2015 for embezzlement of public funds.

For more than 8 years, Fécafoot has been placed under the supervision of a Standardization Committee (Conor) on several occasions.

Seidou Mbombo Njoya's victory in 2018 seemed to have ended this crisis.

But his victory was invalidated in early 2021, following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

CAN 2021, the first short-term challenge

Will the avalanche of procedures at the CAS, a body based in Switzerland, finally stop?

In any case, the time has come for celebration for Samuel Eto'o.

The former star striker of Real Mallorca, FC Barcelona and Inter Milan, in particular, will however very quickly have to immerse himself in his new role.

In less than a month, CAN 2021 begins, organized from January 9 to February 6, 2022 in his country.

A competition he has played six times and won twice.

His goal this time will be for Cameroon to shine as a host for the first time since 1972.
