Winter is cold and dry. Many people feel dry mouth, dry eyes, and dry skin, especially young people who often use mobile phones and surf the Internet. People often attribute the cause to “getting angry”.

However, there is a recurring dry mouth and eyes that are not caused by "getting up", but Sjogren's syndrome.

What kind of disease is this?

How to identify?

What's the harm?

Rao Hui, director and chief physician of the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, Hunan Provincial People's Hospital, gave a detailed explanation.

The case has been troubled by dry mouth for a long time, and it turned out to be suffering from Sjogren’s syndrome

Recently, many people feel that they have dry lips, dry skin, dry throat, and dry eyes. They think that this is "getting hot". Drinking plenty of water and eating foods that nourish yin and dryness can solve the problem.

However, the 42-year-old Ms. Zhang was troubled by dry mouth for a long time.

Ms. Zhang is a middle school teacher. Recently, she always feels that she is short of water. She has to bring a water glass when she goes out. She feels dry mouth without saying a few words in class. She thinks it is “getting angry”, so she goes on her own. I took medicines for clearing away heat and detoxification, but it didn't get better.

Not only that, a year ago, she discovered that her teeth were not very good. At the time, she thought it was a common tooth decay. After quitting sweets and insisting on rinsing and brushing her teeth after meals, the situation did not get better.

In only one year, the lower teeth in her mouth fell off one after another, and she hurried to the dentistry department of the hospital for treatment.

The dentist asked Ms. Zhang to see the rheumatology and immunology department, which puzzled her.

Only after the rheumatic immunologist conducted relevant examinations for her, did she find out the culprit of her dry mouth and tooth loss-Sjogren's syndrome.

Many people are surprised that dryness has become a disease.

Rao Hui introduced that Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease that mainly invades human lacrimal glands and salivary glands, and belongs to the category of rheumatic immune diseases.

Sjogren’s syndrome is not uncommon clinically, and the age of onset is concentrated in 40 to 50 years.

In the outpatient clinic, Rao Hui encountered a female patient: Because her immediate family member passed away, she was very sad, but she "want to cry without tears."

Some patients have severe dry mouth and need to use soup to swallow foods such as rice and steamed buns. They also have multiple cavities (cavities) and tooth flaky loss.

Some patients go to the respiratory department because of frequent dry coughs and shortness of breath after exercise, and finally they are diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome after examination.

Analyze how to distinguish "getting hot" and Sjogren's syndrome

“Many people mistakenly think that dry mouth and eyes are caused by dry weather, and they did not go to the hospital for treatment in time, thus delaying treatment.” Rao Hui said that “increasing” is mainly manifested as hot body, dry lips, and mood. Restlessness, some people will have sores or sore throat and other symptoms, but will also grow red and painful acne.

Although there are symptoms such as dry skin and dry mouth and pharynx in "getting heat", it has obvious seasonal characteristics. Generally, after autumn and winter, the symptoms will alleviate on their own.

Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease with dry mouth and eyes as typical features.

"This is because the immune system has a problem, invading the lacrimal glands, salivary glands and other exocrine glands, causing the secretion of tears, saliva, sweat, and digestive juices to be blocked, and unable to enter the eyes, oral cavity, digestive tract, etc., so patients often feel the mouth Dry tongue, dry eyes, foreign body sensation, and dry stools. In severe cases, you may cry without tears, and even eating will be affected." Rao Hui said that in addition to dry mouth and dry eyes, Sjogren’s syndrome may also have the following Symptoms, such as limb joint pain, muscle weakness, unexplained skin rash, chest tightness when going up the stairs, shortness of breath, dry cough, unexplained liver function damage, blood cell decline, repeated parotitis, parotid gland swelling, in recent months or Tooth decay and tooth loss occurred rapidly within a few years.

If Sjogren’s syndrome is not treated in time, multiple organs may be involved, such as lung, kidney, liver, etc., pulmonary interstitial fibrosis, renal tubular acidosis, primary biliary cirrhosis, etc. may occur; if it invades the central nervous system System, it will cause cognitive impairment, meningitis, multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis, spinal cord involvement and so on.

Rao Hui said that due to the diversified clinical symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome, patients often prefer to see specialist clinics such as dentistry, ophthalmology, dermatology, and respiratory medicine, which increases the difficulty of early diagnosis of the disease.

If the specialist does not test the patient's serum autoantibodies, the diagnosis is likely to be delayed.

Therefore, patients with the above suspected symptoms must be vigilant and go to the rheumatology and immunology department in time.

Remind to pay attention to these aspects in daily life

At present, the cause of Sjogren’s syndrome is not yet clear, and is related to genetics and viral infections. There is no cure. The main treatment methods are to relieve symptoms, reduce organ damage, and delay disease progression.

"Once the diagnosis is clear, patients with Sjogren's syndrome should insist on regular follow-up visits in the rheumatology and immunology department." Rao Hui said that as long as early detection and early intervention and treatment, the patient can still live like a normal person.
