They are often one of the rare contacts for the nomadic populations of eastern Mauritania, a desert region, difficult to access, which no motorized vehicle can reach.

They bring news from around the world, settle certain conflicts between breeders, and above all provide first aid to families who live in the greatest poverty.

They also have a decisive role in the surveillance of some 1,200 kilometers of borders with the troubled regions of Mali.
