The altarpiece "The life of the Virgin" in Luemschwiller (Haut-Rhin) needs to be thoroughly restored.
The work was estimated at nearly 150,000 euros.
An amount that the small town cannot afford on its own.
To help it, the Heritage Foundation has launched an appeal for donations to the tune of 30,000 euros, said France 3 Grand Est on Tuesday.
"This work undeniably deserves our support"
This treasure dates from the end of the 15th century.
"It is the best preserved altarpiece in Alsace, after that of Unterlinden", according to Claude Gasser, deputy departmental delegate of Haut-Rhin of the Heritage Foundation.
"This work undeniably deserves our support", adds Pierre Goetz, regional delegate of the foundation.
To restore the masterpiece, it will first be necessary to eradicate the xylophagous insects which threaten its wooden panels.
The experts will also have to stabilize and revive the different layers of paint.
If the 30,000 euros are not collected, the municipality of Luemschwiller will have to dig into its own funds.
The Foundation could also help out.
