Since the emergence of the Omicron variant, we have the impression of being taken back two years, at the very beginning of the coronavirus epidemic.

The borders are closing one after the other, against the advice of the WHO, but allowing "to gain 10, 15 days on the arrival of the Omicron variant", according to Jean-François Delfraissy, president of the Scientific Council.

A “precious” gain, but a complex situation as the Christmas holidays approach.

Lovers of the Arctic Circle, Ultramarins wishing to reunite with their families or simple tourists wishing to live a Christmas abroad, many French people take advantage of the end-of-year celebrations to leave.

Where will you be able to travel with the current restrictions?

went around the world, and the question.

In Japan, Israel and Equatorial Guinea, the border is closed

The country of the Rising Sun announced Monday the closure of its borders to all foreign visitors, and asks airlines to suspend all new reservations for the entire month of December.

Only Japanese citizens currently abroad can re-enter the archipelago.

Ditto in Israel, whose borders were closed on the evening of Sunday, November 28.

"The entry of foreign nationals into Israel is prohibited except in cases approved by a special committee", announced the office of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

This measure will remain in place for at least the next two weeks.

Finally, Equatorial Guinea announced late Thursday afternoon to suspend all international flights from December 6 to January 2.

Only professional or medical trips within the country are authorized, according to the new decree, and travelers must be provided, in addition to a vaccination record, with a negative PCR test.

In the United States, test of less than 24 hours required on entry

The White House announced on Thursday that the United States will demand from next week the presentation of a negative test carried out the day before departure.

Travelers will also need to be vaccinated.

In southern Africa, travel resumed on December 4

Home of the emergence of the Omicron variant, southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe) is virtually cut off from the world at present.

But France has announced the resumption of flights from December 4, with "drastic" supervision, said Gabriel Attal.

Only the French, EU nationals, diplomats and seafarers will be able to take flights between southern Africa and France.

Upon return to France, a Covid test will be imposed on arrival, followed by isolation for seven days in the event of a negative test, ten if the test is positive.

In Asia and the Pacific, many countries still closed, Fiji reopens

According to the World Tourism Organization, 46 countries remain completely closed to tourists, and 55 partially.

Many states in Asia and the Pacific still ban "non-essential" travel.

Australia thus closes its borders "to people who do not have an Australian passport".

But some of these countries have an economy that is very dependent on tourism, and this sector is devastated.

This is the case of the Fiji Islands, which had set for December 1 the reopening of borders to tourists to revive the economy.

The Omicron variant will not change the government's plans, especially for France which is a “travel partner” country of the archipelago.

In Morocco, air borders are closed

Since November 25, flights to and from France have been suspended "until further notice" by Morocco, due to the resurgence of cases of coronavirus in France.

The air borders were then completely closed with the emergence of the Omicron variant for at least two weeks.

In the European Union, no closed border but local restrictions

At present, no European country has closed its borders to its neighbors, most of them content to cut off links with the seven countries of southern Africa.

But, like France, a health pass is required to enter the territory of most of the 27. Namely, a complete vaccination schedule, a PCR test of less than 72 hours or an antigen test of less than 48 hours, or the result of a positive test for more than 11 days and less than 6 months.

These conditions are also the same for traveling to French overseas territory.

But now, strong restrictions apply in some countries for non-vaccinated people, such as Germany where entry to non-essential shops, restaurants, places of culture and recreation is prohibited.

In the United Kingdom, compulsory testing for vaccinated

To set foot on British soil, the French Embassy specifies the protocol.

If you are vaccinated, you will need to book a “day 2” PCR test before travel, and self-isolate in the UK while awaiting the test result.

It can nevertheless be done on the day of arrival.

People staying for less than two days must book and pay for the PCR test but are not obligated to perform it.

Unvaccinated people must prove a compelling reason to travel to the UK.

They must also justify a negative test three days before departure, and isolate themselves 10 days with tests on the second and eighth days of isolation.
