Founder of the divisionist (or pointillist) movement, the painter Georges Seurat would have been 162 years old this Thursday.
The French artist, who died at only about thirty, was indeed born in Paris on December 2, 1859, reports
Le Point
.
Divisionism consists of superimposing small spots of pure color on a canvas to form forms visible to the naked eye when removed from the work.
The technique was born thanks to the theory of colors and optical physics, which inspired Georges Seurat, explains Google on its doodle site.
The brain is thus deceived, with the illusion of seeing uniform colors.
By applying thousands of tiny spots of pure color, French painter Georges Seurat fathered a new style of painting: pointillism 🇫🇷 🎨

Died at 32
Born into a wealthy family, Georges Seurat studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris.
He is one of the original members of the Society of Independent Artists.
The painter has always suffered the mistrust of his peers and critics, unconvinced by the style he proposed in his works.

The artist at the origin of neo-impressionism leaves relatively few canvases behind him: he indeed died at the age of 32 from meningitis.
All of his works were completed in less than a decade.
"Our poor friend killed himself by too much work," said his friend Paul Signac, co-founder of Pointillism.
Some of his paintings are still very well known, in particular

It is this last canvas that was chosen for the doodle.

Georges Seurat is buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
