A Mexican gang stormed a prison in a Hollywood manner, using a convoy of cars, including an armored vehicle, before clashing with the guards, and was able to free 9 prisoners.

The operation was carried out in a prison in downtown Tula, and among those smuggled was the leader of a local gang known as "Pueblos Unidos", according to the British newspaper, "The Guardian".

A prison guard was wounded, as well as a police officer, in the attack, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning, according to authorities in the state of Hidalgo.

Local media, quoted by the newspaper, reported that the gang also detonated several car bombs, but the authorities said they were still investigating how the vehicles caught fire.

It is reported that detonating car bombs is a rare occurrence in Mexico, but the expected scenario is that the gang blew up the cars to distract the police and army during the operation.

"An armed group stormed the prison with several cars, and near it two vehicles were burned, as part of the criminal group's operation, in order to divert attention," said Simon Vargas, Minister of the Interior of the state of Hidalgo.

According to the Al-Hurra website, the authorities announced that members of the army, police and National Guard were participating in a "massive hunt" for the gang.

The newspaper says that the city of Tula, is the site of the huge “Pemex” refinery, and gangs use oil pipelines to steal gasoline from them, and later sell it to car drivers or gas stations, often with threats if they do not buy.

The gang that raided the prison is believed to be one of the main gangs behind the gasoline theft in Hidalgo state.

It is noteworthy that Mexican gangs raided several prisons during the past years, or impersonated the security forces, to free prisoners, according to the newspaper.
