Three breeders from Bruges, Béost and Laruns (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) obtained authorization from the prefecture of the department to shoot wolves in specific circumstances.
The local authorities have granted this permission to the farmers for a period of two years, until December 2023, indicates France Bleu Béarn Bigorre.
The official documents have been sent to their addressee.
They constitute a derogation from the ban on harming wolves, which are a protected species.
This exception does not authorize its holders to organize beatings or traps targeting the animal.
The three breeders, on the other hand, have the right to shoot a wolf if it threatens their own herds.
The shot must come from a hunting weapon.
Mandatory firing declaration
This must be used by an authorized person or holder of a hunting license.
Any shooting must be followed by a declaration within 12 hours, or even more quickly if the target animal has been killed or injured.
A justification must then be provided.
The recipients of the exemptions were chosen for their location, where the presence of wolves is known.
They have also already put in place devices to prevent attacks and protect their animals.
