• Transcan is a French Riviera company which has just opened a logistics platform in the center of Nice with the aim of carrying out the last kilometer of parcel delivery.

  • Equipped with cargo bikes capable of carrying up to 350 kg, the delivery men have electric assistance that allows them to go on average at 15 km / h and quietly deliver the neighborhood.

  • Nothing changes for customers, apart from the idea that through Transcan Eco-city, they have reduced CO2 emissions by 5% compared to conventional transport by van.

In a context of development of the sale of online products, in particular with confinement, the city of Nice has just inaugurated the first logistics space of the last kilometer Eco-city of the Transcan company on Boulevard Gambetta.

Instead of vans, eight cargo bikes and two electric utility vehicles will eventually deliver the city.

A project in connection with the policy of the Nice metropolis "to appease the center": these deliveries by cargo bike make it possible to reduce CO2 emissions by 5%, according to the town hall.

By 2022, a low-emission zone will be applied to freight transport with the overall goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.

So how does this hub work?

“I start my day at 6 am at the Pal (logistics business park) in Saint-Isidore where I sort for my tour, explains Lucas, 25, delivery man and employee at Transcan.

After sorting, I go to the center of Nice to distribute the parcels with my four colleagues ”.

They then set off for the “last mile of delivery” by cargo bike.

For the customer, "that doesn't change anything"

"At Transcan, we like to talk about the last meter," says Sébastien Le Guélaff, project manager in the company. The idea is to have five other hubs by 2023 to completely mesh the city ”. Indeed, once the bike is on, Lucas only uses his car for a few meters to go from door to door. “We have two tours that we divide geographically. In the morning, we take care of GLS where each delivery person has a dozen packages. In the afternoon, it's Mondial Relay with around fifty packages each. Delivery takes a few seconds. The longest is to wait for the person, ”he smiles.

On the customer side, “that doesn't change anything”.

Asked when they received the packages, they said “thank you!

»And recognize that« it is good »before encouraging (sometimes) the cyclist.

"Most of the time, they don't realize it since I go to their door," Lucas says.

As for a delivery by truck, if the person does not respond, a redelivery is scheduled or the package is dropped off at a relay point.

But the lead time and the price remain the same.

“We hope that this will evolve over time,” says the project manager.

The service is relatively the same.

The bike can carry up to 350 kg, while the delivery man drops packages up to 30 kg.

“We have clothes but also furniture.

I have already delivered an entire toilet, ”recalls the Transcan employee.

A bike adapted to the city

“We made sure that the bike was suitable.

They go at 15 km / h on average with electric assistance.

The 1.9 m3 box is large but does not pose a problem for parking or for taking the cycle paths, ”explains Sébastien Le Guélaff.

Lucas adds: “It's fun, we just have to pedal.

We are even protected if it rains, we have cameras as mirrors and wheels suitable for paving stones ”.

A service which therefore remains different from what already exists in Nice, such as Le Lien.

“We had a discussion with the manager.

Finally, we complement each other because we are not intended to be a courier, it is not our core target.

We can compare that by saying that they are the light vehicles [light vehicle] in this area and that we are the semi-trailer, ”assures the project manager.

Creation of a protected marine area, eradication of disposable plastic, pedestrianization of a wharf, how does the Nice metropolis want to transform its coastline ecologically?

Soon bikes to deliver the cold

The 800 m2 surface area of Transcan eco city makes it possible to receive 300 parcels each day, with the aim of having "up to 1,500 in the long term," explains the project manager.

In addition to the existing fleet, two bicycles are arriving with self-cooled boxes to meet a large demand from local traders.

»The basement of the warehouse will then be converted into a cold room.

Also a relay point, this space will soon have lockers where it will be possible to pick up your package outside of opening hours.
