The Ballon d'Or was won by Argentinian Lionel Messi for the seventh time, this November 29, 2021 in Paris.

Egyptian Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) finished 7th in the standings and Algerian Ryad Mahrez (Manchester City) 20th.

African football has been waiting since 1995 and the coronation of Liberian George Weah for another player from the continent to be on the podium.

Senegalese Edouard Mendy finished second best goalkeeper of the year.

Still no African on the Ballon d'Or podium.

Neither Mohamed Salah (7th), nor Ryad Mahrez (20th) managed to finish on one of the first three steps of the podium for the 2021 edition, this November 29 in Paris.

The Egyptian had finished 6th in 2018 and 5th in 2019. The Algerian, he climbed to 7th place in 2016.

It is therefore a new disappointment for African football which has still not placed one of its representatives in one of the first three places in the ranking, since the coronation of the Liberian George Weah in 1995.

Big disappointment around Edouard Mendy

But the biggest disappointment for many followers of continental football is perhaps Edouard Mendy's second place for the Yachine Trophy.

This was given to Gianluigi Donnarumma, winner of Euro 2021 with Italy.

The Senegalese goalkeeper, impressive with Chelsea, had won the Champions League with Chelsea.

Edouard Mendy in 2021:

🏆 Winner of the LDC

🏆 Winner of the European Supercup

🏆 Best LDC goalkeeper

🏆 Record Clean sheets in the LDC

🏆 UEFA goalkeeper of the year

But that's not enough to win the #TropheeYachine trophy.

The reason is that he is African.
