Did you know that the Greenland shark holds the record for longevity of vertebrate animals?
According to a study published in 2016, these animals can indeed live more than 500 years!
Twenty-eight individuals were tested for carbon 14 and the estimated age of the oldest of them was between 272 and 512 years.
This discovery offers new study perspectives.
Julius Nielsen, a researcher at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, is particularly interested in the threats to this variety of sharks: “Females are estimated to be over 100 years old when they reach sexual maturity.
This should trigger all alarm signals assigned to endangered species.
Especially since we do not know how many cubs have a litter ... ”.
