Regarding cervical spinal cord injury in the neck caused by a fall or a traffic accident, a research group such as Gunma University has summarized the research results that if surgery is performed within 24 hours after the injury, the recovery of paralysis in the limbs will be accelerated. ..

The research group hopes that early treatment will spread.

This was organized by Professor Hirotaka Tsukuda of the Graduate School of Medicine, Gunma University and a research group led by the University of Tokyo.

According to the group, cervical spinal cord injury in the neck caused by falls and traffic accidents is increasing rapidly with aging, and paralysis often remains in the limbs, which makes the burden of long-term care an issue.

In response to this situation, the research group investigated the recovery status of 70 patients who underwent surgery within 24 hours after being injured and those who underwent surgery after 2 weeks, and as a result, within 24 hours. It was found that the person who underwent surgery had a faster recovery from the paralysis.

On the other hand, under the current situation in Japan, only 20% of cases are operated on within 24 hours after an injury.

The research group says, "It is expected that guidelines including the results of this study will be created in the future, and early treatment for surgery within 24 hours at specialized facilities will spread."
