MEPs come to the aid of conventional television channels.

The Cultural Affairs Commission of the National Assembly has just launched a "flash" mission on the home screens of boxes and remote controls, according to information from the daily

Les Echos

.

Objective: “To preserve competition between the actors” of television.

The members of the commission will assess the consequences of the Netflix, Disney + or Amazon Prime Video buttons that have appeared on remote controls in recent years.

Some of them no longer even have a numeric keypad allowing direct access to terrestrial channels, points out

Les Echos

.

“The television channels risk being penalized in the future, fears Bruno Studer, President of the Commission.

And we do not refrain from appealing to the Competition Authority, according to the conclusions of the mission ”.

The first Netflix buttons in 2011

The subject is far from trivial, as 3.3 million connected televisions were sold in France in 2020, an increase of 35%.

These buttons on the remote controls provide one-touch access to streaming services.

It was Netflix that was a pioneer in the field: the first Netflix buttons appeared in 2011.

The home screens of the boxes are also in the viewfinder of the committee.

They would highlight the biggest platforms, to the detriment of French platforms like Salto.

But good news for the actors of "classic" television, a new article added to the law of 1986 on the audio-visual one envisages that from January 1, the interfaces of televisions, speakers or even stores of applications will have to ensure a “Appropriate visibility” of services of general interest.

While waiting perhaps better with this mission of the National Assembly, which must deliver its conclusions in January.
