• In order to fight against sexist harassment and insecurity, in 2015 Sytral launched “exploratory walks” of users.

  • Operated initially on the bus lines, these marches will extend to the Guillotière district.

  • The recruitment of ambassadors was launched on Thursday.

Gender-based violence, street harassment? “Unfortunately, they are very visible on a daily basis,” replied Delphine. Lyonnaise by adoption, this young mother of 32, is part of the forty or so female volunteers who carry out “exploratory walks” on the Lyon public transport network. An initiative, launched in 2015, which has proven itself. For example, descent on demand has been implemented on several bus lines, every evening after 10 p.m. The waiting time is now displayed at the stations and the lighting has been reinforced.

On this Thursday, the international day for the elimination of violence against women, Sytral launched a new campaign to fight against sexist harassment, signed by Diglee, while announcing its desire to extend the principle of "marches" to l scale of a neighborhood.

That of Guillotière, in this case.

The choice is not trivial, the Place Gabriel-Péri, where a wild market has been deployed with various street traffic, arouses a strong feeling of insecurity among residents and passers-by.

"Questioned every two minutes"

This time, for the “ambassadors”, it will no longer be a question of exploring a bus line. They will have to shine in groups around "the bear pit", walk the streets that lead to the C9 and C12 bus stops. Do the same along the tram line and around the metro station. With the same objective: "to establish a field diagnosis". Formulate proposals after having raised all the points which, today, prevent women from feeling safe.

“When we pass, we are looked at from the bottom up.

We receive comments about our skin color, relates Delphine who lived in the area for three years.

At one point, I could not move around without being challenged every two minutes to be offered to buy illegal things.

It was quite intrusive.

"When you get out of the metro, you are immediately arrested for cigarettes or drugs", confirms Edith, 46 years old.

She is also one of the “walkers”.

La Guillotière is no exception, however.

In Bron, where she lives, comments are also legion.

"We are frowned upon for our way of dressing or our way of speaking," she testifies.

Start of recruitment

Sarah, a 22-year-old master's student in psychology, has been "followed several times". Whether at La Guillotière or Rillieux-la-Pape, near his accommodation. “Sometimes there isn't even any distance. There is friction, she testifies. We hear hissing, mocking, animal comparisons, insults or phrases like: "You are there for what you want". It's simple, you can't really walk freely anymore. It's not for nothing that you see more and more women walking with headphones in their ears ”.

Thursday morning, Sarah and her comrades went towing in the streets to convince other women to join their ranks and inform them that the recruitment phase was launched.

The volunteers have also published a guide and posters posted near the stations.

The first “exploratory walks” in the heart of La Guillotière should start in the first quarter of 2022.
