• "Encanto" presents a Colombian family with magical powers threatened by an invisible force.

  • This first choral film from Disney studios seduces thanks to the songs of Lin-Manuel Miranda and his endearing characters.

  • It tackles more adult themes such as family pressure and the trauma suffered by migrants.

But how do Disney studios always reinvent themselves?

Encanto, The Fantastic Madrigal Family

of Byron Howard, Jared Bush and Charise Castro Smith is a marvelous musical written by Lin-Manuel Miranda to whom we owe

Hamilton

,

Vaiana

and

The Return of Mary Poppins

,

among others

.

This 60th animated film produced by Mickey's firm since

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

(1937) evokes a Colombian family with strange powers.

"Encanto" means "Charm" in Spanish.

This story is not lacking, but the heroes see their magic threatened by an invisible entity that only the heroine Mirabel, who has not received a supernatural gift, seems to be able to control.

Down to the smallest detail

“This is Disney Studios' first choral film, which complicated things. It was necessary to present all the characters in one song from the first minutes of the screening, ”explains Clark Spencer, producer of the film who has since become the president of Walt Disney Animation Studio. Visual and sound dazzling,

Encanto

has the particularity of highlighting several main characters, each more endearing than the next: from the gruff grandmother to the overly spoiled princess, including the uncle "whom we do not talk about" and to the muscular sister who juggles donkeys. Without forgetting Casita, a house with a strong personality that is expressed through its architecture. "The competition pulls us up, admits Clark Spencer, also producer of

Zootopia

and

Lilo and Stich

.

The public has become more and more demanding and so have we because we are all fans of animation.

"

Clark Spencer is especially proud of Casita but also of details that the public might not even notice.

“The fabrics and the hair of the characters constitute an authentic tour de force!

he exclaims.

We have really achieved a prodigious result.

It is one of our particularities to manage to combine photo realism and original animation ”, he insists.

The magic is total in

Encanto

which also surprises by its intrigue tackling more serious subjects like the traumas undergone by the migrants or the weight of the obligations that a family can impose on its members.

"I sometimes wonder if Walt Disney would be happy with what has become of this studio which is moving towards greater diversity," asks Clark Spencer.

It is believed that Walt can be proud of his heirs.
