Actresses banned on Afghan TV

The Taliban government in Afghanistan has imposed a series of severe restrictions on what can be shown on television.

According to a circular issued by the Ministry of Propagation of Virtue to TV stations on Sunday, from now on TV stations can no longer show dramas featuring women or that contradict the movement's interpretation of Sharia and Afghan values.

The publication said that films that promote foreign cultures or traditions in Afghan society or that incite vice will be banned.

In addition, insulting or underestimating anyone in entertainment programs is prohibited, in an apparent reference to the incident that spread between an academic and a Taliban spokesman during a live television debate, which is the only one that has witnessed public criticism of the Taliban since its return to power last August.

Although women are no longer allowed to act, female anchors and reporters are still allowed to appear on Afghan television provided they wear a headscarf.
