It is about the management of the most precious natural resource for farmers and ranchers, water.

When you have, on average, 4 to 5 months of rainy season and a long and interminable dry season, you have to imagine some tricks.

The word

bouli

means “water reservoir” in Mooré, one of the main languages of Burkina Faso.

Kiérim is a village in the commune of Ouessa, which is one of the eight communes of the province of Ioba.

In the municipalities of this province of Ioba, the herders do not have any feeding problems for the cattle.

The rainy season is long, and the average rainfall is 750 mm / year.

So we have greenery for a while, and dried herbs and agro-food by-products for the dry season.

The problem is the configuration of the land which causes a rapid flow of rainwater.

Luckily, the breeders of Kiérim benefited from a Bouli, dug by the Ministry of Animal and Fisheries Resources.

It is an irrigation method used in intensive market gardening, originating in Burkina Faso, but also used in Niger, Mauritania and other countries of the Sahel.

A bouli is centered on an artificial lake dug in impermeable soil.

The bouli retains in its bottom the rare precipitations collected during the rainy period, thus making water available during the dry season which lasts nearly 9 months.
