A hunter, who was

tracking wild boar in the surroundings of the French town of Seix,

in the Ariège department, in the Pyrenees border with Spain, was seriously injured this Saturday by a bear, which he later shot.

The 70-year-old hunter

was bitten by the plantigrade on the leg;

He was initially evacuated to a health center in Foix and later transferred to the Toulouse University Hospital, according to the Ariège prefecture.

The events occurred on Saturday around 3:30 p.m. and members of the high mountain gendarmerie

intervened in the rescue of the wounded man.

According to the hunter's own words, he was participating in a wild boar hunt, with a group, when he was attacked by

a bear that was accompanied by her cubs.

He explained that, after the attack, he shot the animal twice, which

was found dead a few meters from where the hunter was rescued.

A judicial investigation has been opened to clarify the circumstances in which the accident occurred, according to the Ariège prefecture.

"This is really what we feared. Today it is clear that living with the bear is complicated," Christine Tequi, the president of the Ariège departmental council, told AFP.

He added that this danger is aggravated by "the greater presence of breeding bears" in the area of the Couserans massif, where there are currently around forty plantigrades.

In June 2020, also in the Ariège area, the body was found of a bear shot dead.

The then French Minister of Ecological Transition, Élisabeth Borney, announced that the State would file a complaint because

the bear is a protected species.

Bear population increase

The population of bears on both sides of the Pyrenees reached 64 specimens in 2020 and in that time 16 new cubs were born from nine different females.

This shows that the endangered species continues to grow in recent times.

This is clear from the report on the actions of the Brown Bear Cross-Border Monitoring Group in the Pyrenees, released in 2021, in which the Generalitat of Catalonia, the General Council of Aran, the Governments of Aragon, Andorra, Navarra and France, and the Brown Bear Foundation.

Specifically, this group

counted 29 females, another 29 males and six specimens whose sex could not be determined.

Regarding their age, 35 are adults, 13 are sub-adults and 16 are puppies.

This estimate refers to the minimum observed population, so it is not ruled out that it is even somewhat higher.

This is a record figure since the start of the recovery efforts for the species in the Pyrenees, possibly the highest figure in almost a century.

For reference, the bear population in the Pyrenees was 51 in 2018 and 58 in 2019.

Regarding the number of births, 16 new offspring of nine different females have been registered, the highest figure recorded so far.

Between 1996 and 2020, a total of 98 pups from 54 litters were born.

In this sense, the referred monitoring group pointed out that the females that have given birth in recent months have been Fosca (1), Caramellita (3), Plume (1), Bambou (2), Nheu (1), Callista (1), Chataigne (3), Gaia (2) and Aran (2).

At the same time, two specimens were located that had been reported as missing, as they were not detected in 2018 and 2019.

The specimens that are considered dead or missing, without evidence after two years or that there is evidence of their death, are nine.

To which must be added the bear killed on Saturday.

This includes the deaths caused by the man of the Sarousse bear, the male Cachou and another male killed by gunfire in France, as well as six more individuals, four born in 2019 and two subadult males of which there has been no news for a long time. a couple of years.

On the other hand, two specimens that had been considered missing have been located, since they were not detected neither in 2018 nor in 2019, and that this 2020 they have reappeared.
