A hunter in the French Pyrenees kills a bear that bit him

A hunter who was hunting wild boars in the town of Six in the Pyrenees (southwest of Vrazza) was seriously injured after a bear attacked him and bit him in the leg, and soon killed it, according to several sources.

Ariège police stated that the injured fisherman was taken to the Foix town hospital and from there to the University Hospital in Toulouse, noting that a judicial investigation has been opened into the circumstances of the accident.

The mountain gendarmes rescued the 70-year-old fisherman, who was severely injured in the femoral artery.

The hunter recounted that he was participating in hunting wild boars with a group when a bear accompanied him with its cubs attacked him and bit him in the leg, indicating that he shot her twice after that.

The bear was found dead a few meters from where the hunter was rescued.

"This is what we were really afraid of. Today we realize that coexistence is complicated," Arieg County Council President Christine Tekoi told AFP.

She notes that this risk is exacerbated by the "increasing presence of breeding bears" in the Koziran mountain range, where there are currently about 40 bears.

In the nineties of the twentieth century, France launched a program to bring brown bears from Slovenia and to revive this species on its territory due to its being threatened with extinction.

Most of these bears live in the central part of this mountain range, especially in Arij.
