A competition for the French Council of Muslim Worship (CFCM)?

This Sunday, the Mosque of Paris and three federations install a National Council of Imams (CNI), intended to give approval to imams, an instance contested by the president of the CFCM who does not rule out if necessary to challenge it in court.

In the fall of 2020, as part of the fight against radical Islam and "separatism", the Elysée had urged the various federations making up the CFCM, the main interlocutor of the public authorities, to set up a CNI, in charge of “Label” imams practicing in France.

But, following internal divisions, the project went unheeded for several months.

Organizations have left the CFCM office

The Great Mosque of Paris, the Rassemblement des Musulmans de France, Musulmans de France (ex-UOIF close to the Muslim Brotherhood) and the French Federation of Islamic Associations of Africa, the Comoros and the Antilles (FFAIACA), who left the office CFCM executive last March, say they have continued the work.

These four federations are organizing, this Sunday, a "constitutive assembly" of the CNI, allowing, among other things, to validate its statutes, then a presentation of this body of a little less than 30 people, which "will be able in particular to approve the imams and mourchidates (women with a religious responsibility such as chaplains for example) ”, they specify in a press release.

"In favor of the emergence of a republican Islam"

This CNI, moreover "will develop a statute of the imam and the mourchida and will establish their career plan", they add. According to them, the installation of this CNI works "for the recognition of their efforts in favor of the emergence of a republican Islam, bearer of the values of peace, solidarity and openness". They specify that these bodies "remain open to any Muslim federation and to any imam who would agree to respect the statutory provisions".

But the president of the CFCM Mohammed Moussaoui qualified this initiative of "diversion of the work done under the aegis of the CFCM".

He announces that the various regional and departmental structures will meet on December 12 in “congresses” to set up a CNI.

He also warns the new organization by explaining that the CFCM "reserves the right to act by all legal means to put an end to this irresponsible attitude which only worsens a situation of division detrimental to all", he said. in a press release.
