Elections in Venezuela: towards an unblocking of the political and economic situation of the country?

Venezuelans go to the polls this Sunday, November 21, 2021, for a regional and municipal poll.

23 governorships and 335 mayors are at stake amid strong internal tensions and economic sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union and Canada.

After three years of boycott and calls for abstention, the opposition to Nicolas Maduro, whose re-election in 2018 was deemed fraudulent, will participate in the ballot, but in a generally disunited manner.

A ballot under surveillance.

350,000 soldiers and police will be mobilized.

Staff complemented by an observation mission from the European Union, experts from the UN and the Carter Center founded by former US President Jimmy Carter.

The stake of this ballot is the political and economic unblocking of Venezuela.

The participation rate will be scrutinized.

Will the crisis and the sanctions get the better of Nicolas Maduro's party, and more generally of Chavismo?

The question is asked when Donald Trump's strategy to dislodge Maduro has not worked.

That Joe Biden, who is more flexible, also knows that negotiating with Nicolas Maduro could cost him dearly in the perspective of the mid-term elections in 2022.
