What do you know about acromegaly of the extremities?

The German Society of Endocrinology said that acromegaly is a rare disease caused by the overproduction of growth hormone by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland.

The association explained that the symptoms of this disease are the enlargement of the hands and feet, the increase in the size of the nose and ears, the protrusion of the lower jawbone, and the enlargement of internal organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys, in addition to excessive sweating, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome and sleep apnea syndrome.

The association stressed the need to consult a doctor immediately upon noticing these symptoms to undergo timely treatment and avoid serious consequences, such as heart failure, kidney failure, cirrhosis of the liver, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and colorectal cancer.

Treatment options are medication (growth hormone receptor antagonists), surgery (pituitary tumor resection), and radiotherapy, which is usually used after surgery if the tumor has not been completely removed.
