• PE teachers cycled 42 km throughout the city of Marseille to denounce the lack of sports equipment in the city.

  • Faced with these difficulties, PE times are sometimes only 50% of what they should be and nearly 75% of students in the northern districts do not know how to swim.

  • The town hall expresses its desire to catch up with this delay, but this will inevitably take time in the face of the immense task.

A duel between the Luminy pool and the North pool. Not to find out which one is the most pleasant to dive in, but to determine which one is the most emblematic of the dilapidated state of sports equipment in Marseille. This is the little game to which several PE teachers from the SNEP-FSU union took part on Thursday, by organizing a 42 km cyclothon around fifteen facilities from all over the city to denounce their state of abandonment. Swimming pools, but also gymnasiums like that of Bonneveine, in the chic 8th arrondissement, or that of La Busserine, in the northern districts, and stadiums.

“Luminy's swimming pool is quite representative because it is a wart whereas it could be a jewel.

The North pool is even more striking because it is located in a part of the city where nearly 75% of children cannot swim.

In the second largest city in France, bordered by the sea, ”protested Cédric Vassenaix, departmental secretary of SNEP-FSU 13, the majority union among PE teachers.

Observation shared throughout the city, even more shouting in the North

The lack of equipment, and their state of disrepair, in Marseille is often symbolized through the example of swimming pools, but it is glaring in all sports fields. “These sports facilities are used by schools, by clubs, by PE lessons. About 10% of the equipment is not accessible, and 10% is not much because it is simply lacking a lot, ”explains Jean Cugier, co-academic secretary of the SNEP-FSU.

This finding has direct consequences on the teaching of PE for Marseille students.

“When a math teacher doesn't have a square, he doesn't teach geometry.

When we don't have a gymnasium, we have to operate.

And this is not normal, sports equipment should be seen as classrooms!

Just by taking into account travel times, the fact of having to alternate groups for lack of land, water leaks that make some gyms slippery or the presence of broken glass, it is not uncommon for the practice time is barely 50% of what it should be, ”lists the trade unionist.

If this observation is shared throughout the city, it is even more glaring in the northern districts.

"Willingness to catch up"

This cyclothon ended in front of the town hall of Marseille, where they could be received by Pierre Marie Ganozzi, deputy in charge of schools. “The rehabilitation or construction of a new gymnasium is planned for each renovation or construction of schools in our School Plan. They will be accessible for schoolchildren, for PE lessons and for sports and cultural associations. We have the will to make up for this delay, ”promises Pierre Marie Ganozzi. This will inevitably take time, the new municipality has just completed the census of all sports facilities in the city, almost a year and a half after taking office.

The teachers have also been asking for a meeting, in vain, with Sébastien Jibrayel for fourteen months.

A sports assistant who was at Jules Ferry college on Thursday afternoon, where a PE teacher and his students got stoned in class last week.

Another example of the many problems encountered in the practice of sport in Marseille.
