A beaver ramp was installed on October 20 on the Saint-Paul dam in Parthenay (Deux-Sèvres).
Built with the aim of facilitating the movement of rodents, the development was inaugurated on Tuesday, reports
La Nouvelle République
.
The ramp is the first of its kind in the department.
It was designed by the Syndicat Mixte de la Vallée du Thouet (SMVT) in partnership with the French Biodiversity Office.
The total cost of the work amounts to 1,700 euros.
An "impassable" barrier
Placed under the footbridge, this specific arrangement is made up of 35 tonnes of stones from quarries in the region.
In June 2019, a European beaver was fatally hit by a car while trying to bypass the Saint-Paul dam.
This fatal collision had notably made it possible to confirm the return of this protected species in the Thouet watershed for twenty years.
The incident had also revealed the difficulties for the beavers to go up the river, in particular at the level of this dam.
“There is a pit two meters deep.
Despite the weakness of the waterfalls, the height is so great that it makes the dam impassable, ”said Guillaume Charruaud, river mediator technician at SMVT.
