After a year and a half of suspense, it was finally Amiens which was selected to host several emanations from the National Library of France (BnF) announced the institution on Wednesday in a press release.

The project should emerge from the ground by 2028.

The capital of the Somme had applied, in June 2020, along with 71 other municipalities in France for the installation on its territory of a pole bringing together the national press conservatory and the conservation center of the BnF collections.

“The project led by Amiens Métropole and supported by the city of Amiens […] stood out by providing the best response to all the criteria defined in the call for expressions of interest,” declared the BnF.

One of the richest collections in the world

This project offers, in particular, an area of 6.3 hectares of which 30,000 m2 can be built in a risk-free zone and 2 hours from Paris by car and 1 hour 30 minutes by train.

The transversal approach of the project, in connection with the Amiens library network and the visual arts sector to promote the written press, also won over the jury.

The institution's future Amiens pole will allow the BnF to breathe while it is faced with a saturation of its existing buildings.

The new installation should also make it possible to accelerate the digitization of the collections.

Indeed, the BnF press collection alone is one of the richest in the world with more than 300,000 titles ranging from the 17th century to the present day.
