A squat, located in Grabels (Hérault), near Montpellier, was evacuated on Wednesday, indicates the prefecture.

The operation took place "as part of the execution of a court decision served on the occupants" who had six months to leave, notes the prefecture.

"Faced with the observation of the absence of voluntary departure of the occupants", the prefect, Hugues Moutouh, appealed to the assistance of the police.

According to the prefecture, 18 adults and 3 minors were expelled from the premises.

Among them are 12 Albanians, 4 Guineans and 2 Eritreans.

Three of them were placed in administrative detention.

According to the prefecture, the evacuation "took place without incident".

"A brutal expulsion"

Damien Nantes, Médecins du Monde coordinator for Languedoc-Roussillon, points to “a brutal expulsion, without any prior examination of the situation”.

According to the NGO, with this evacuation, it is not 21 people, but 24, including 4 children, who find themselves on the street.

And no accommodation proposal would have been offered, deplores Damien Nantes.

"We do not care at any time about the future of these people," he says.

They should, however, be hosted by the state.

"

In a press release, the prefect affirms his desire to "tackle the problem of squats".

“People who break into the property of others without authorization (…) are completely illegal, all the more so when they are not in a regular situation with regard to the right to stay in the national territory.
