There are 20,000 wild boars in Tongjiang County?

Li Bin, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Center of Tongjiang County, Bazhong City, Sichuan Province: Last year, our county forestry department organized forestry technicians, township cadres and farmers to conduct a preliminary survey of the wild boar population in the county. There are 20,000 wild boars in the county.

Of course, this survey data is affected by professionals and equipment and is not very accurate.

After the pilot work this year is over, we will also organize professional organizations to investigate and verify the number and distribution of wild boar populations in the county, so as to obtain more accurate data.

In addition, the county's forest area is 4.3 million mu. If you look at the standard of 2 heads per square kilometer, the total number of 20,000 heads is not much.

Behind the numbers are issues worthy of attention. As the ecological environment has continued to improve in recent years, the number of wild boars has increased. There are wild boars in mountainous areas and surrounding towns. This has led to serious encounters between wild boars and humans, including damage to crops. It directly threatens the personal safety and property safety of the villagers.

Why is it difficult to hunt wild boars?

Li Bin, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Center of Tongjiang County, Bazhong City, Sichuan Province: Wild boars are ferocious animals. Under the premise that the country prohibits the use of animal traps and electric shocks to hunt, most of us use dog hunting methods to hunt wild boars, but This method is primitive, dangerous, and inefficient.

According to the preliminary trials, only the shotgun has the best hunting effect.

But the most difficult thing is that in Tongjiang County, there is no professional team that supports guns, and there are fewer experienced hunters. Most of them are over 60 or 70 years old. So this year we are piloting. The township also hired the only qualified professional hunting team in Sichuan to support us.

750 wild boars are hunted throughout the year. How was this goal determined?

Li Bin, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Center of Tongjiang County, Bazhong City, Sichuan Province: We applied to the Bazhong Forestry Bureau for a hunting target of 750 heads. This is a control index, not a set target task. Our goal is Must not exceed this number of indicators.

When reporting the indicators, we calculated according to the control standard of no more than 2 heads per square kilometer, and reduced the 750 heads to each township according to the forest area and the degree of wild boar damage in each township. Some townships have 10 to 20 heads. In some towns, there are as many as 40 heads. In fact, this indicator is far from reaching the standard for wild boar population regulation.

According to our preliminary calculations, our county currently has nearly 7 wild boars per square kilometer, which greatly exceeds the standard for wild boar population regulation.

We think that through this year's hunting, we can greatly reduce the frequency of wild boar harm and reduce the loss of crops. On the one hand, we can find ways to reduce the demand of the masses, and on the other hand, it will also increase their satisfaction.

Continue hunting, what does Tongjiang County plan to do next?

Li Bin, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Center of Tongjiang County, Bazhong City, Sichuan Province: As a pilot county for wild boar hazards prevention and control in Sichuan Province, Tongjiang is in the exploratory stage in formulating work plans, forming teams, and organizing hunting.

The main purpose of this year’s pilot program is to form a professional team, explore a set of mechanisms, and sum up experience.

Of course, the pressure we are currently facing is not small, and there are many problems and difficulties, but we are confident and determined to do the livelihood work well, do our best to kill more people, and minimize the loss of people's lives and property.

In the next step, we will adopt three methods to hunt:

  1. First, invite Jiangyou, a professional hunting team with guns, to help. This method is highly efficient.

  2. Secondly, we organize professional teams in our county to hunt by hunting dogs, but in this process, we will strengthen the training and education of the safety knowledge of the hunting team members, and at the same time formulate emergency work plans to ensure that sudden incidents are encountered. We can respond to incidents in a timely and effective manner.

  3. In addition, we will also use traps to trap and kill.

We have previously ordered a cage for wild boar hunting with a company in Chengdu, and it is expected to be installed and used next week.
