Public Health France published on Monday the results of a mortality study carried out in 98 municipalities located around the industrial basin of Lacq (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), reports France Bleu Béarn Bigorre.

This study does not find any excess mortality “for all the causes of death” observed, compared to the average in New Aquitaine.

Overall mortality is even lower than this average for the twelve municipalities closest to the factories.

Their role in the development of cancers, particularly respiratory and digestive cancers, had been suspected since 2016 and the publication of a study relayed by the Society for the Study, Protection and Development of Nature in the South-West (Sepanso) on the excess mortality of local residents between 1968 and 1998.

"An unbearable climate"

If the overall mortality is however higher than the regional average in other more distant municipalities, in particular in terms of non-cancerous respiratory diseases.

These results will now give rise to a morbidity study on the different incidence rates of pathologies, including asthma.

The conclusions also satisfied David Habib, socialist deputy for the third district of Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

"Public Health France and a number of environmental protection associations have created an unbearable climate in the Lacq basin", however lamented the elected official.

Sepanso declined to comment before analyzing the study.
