The town of Mao, 311 kilometers from N'Djamena, in Chad.
It is the capital of the Kanem region.
We are at the gates of the Sahara.
Consequences: chronic food insecurity and acute malnutrition rates above the emergency threshold.
The main export income generating activity is live cattle to Nigeria and Libya.
This makes Mao's market an important infrastructure for camel breeders.

The herders come from villages and hamlets, sell their animals and, with the proceeds of this sale, buy food for the whole year.
It is the desert that dictates this back and forth movement of populations.
We can therefore see the central role of this market.
And we understand why the camels.
Because only a dromedary allows such a seasonal activity.
They are the most suitable animals to live in this arid environment.

Mao and Gaba cattle markets are two pastoral infrastructures, among the 12 built by the Chadian Ministry of Livestock, through the Regional Support Project for Pastoralism in the Sahel, with funding from the World Bank.
These modern infrastructures were handed over to the provincial authorities by the Ministry of Livestock.
