According to a survey, every second employee in Germany goes to work sick.

This is the result of a study by the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) that was published on Wednesday.

51 percent of the respondents said they sometimes, often or very often go to work sick.

According to the information, women are more inclined to the phenomenon known as “presenterism” than their male colleagues.

The workload also plays a role.

According to the study, people who work a lot of overtime are more likely to go to work in poor health.

The TK study was carried out by the Institute for Workplace Health Advice from Konstanz. More than 11,000 employees were surveyed for this purpose between 2018 and 2021. The majority worked in companies. 16 percent of the participants were employed in public institutions. It is unclear how strong the impact of the pandemic will be on the study results. According to the scientists, this is not what the investigation is supposed to do. The goal is to draw a picture of the stress situation.

"If employees work despite illness, this can have negative consequences not only for themselves, but also for the company," said TK boss Jens Baas.

For example, they infected colleagues or made more mistakes.

It is therefore not enough for a company to just look at absenteeism - a look at presenteeism is also part of health management.
