After the emotion aroused by the death of the mayor of Menton Jean-Claude Guibal, on October 25 at the age of 80, place in the throes of his succession.

The election of the new chief magistrate of the Riviera city, this Tuesday, caused the split of the city council.

Yves Juhel, the former second assistant, was appointed by eighteen votes against seventeen for the former first assistant Sandra Paire.

The regional councilor and her supporters then left the assembly and announced their resignation, paving the way for a new call to the polls for voters in Menton.

According to

Nice-Matin

, Yves Juhel announced his intention to start discussions with these elected officials announced on departure, but if “all the resignations were confirmed, a ballot would have to be restarted,” the municipality confirmed at

20 Minutes.

Four resigners (at least) to convince

A new election process is indeed necessary if the municipal council loses "a third or more of its members or has less than five members", as regulated by article L2122-8 of the General Code of Local Authorities.

It would therefore suffice that at least four resigning finally decide to stay for Yves Juhel to be confirmed in his function.

The municipal council of Menton having 35 elected, thirteen departures would be sufficient to have to organize a new election.

Negotiations should therefore take place in the coming hours, or even the next days.

At the same time, and while waiting to see more clearly, Yves Juhel will have to assume his new functions.
