Actor

Dean Stockwell

, who was an Oscar nominee for 'Married to Everyone' (1988) and who appeared in

David Lynch's

'Blue Velvet' (1986)

, has died at age 85, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter magazines reported Tuesday .

His representative pointed out that Stockwell (Los Angeles, USA, 1936) died last Sunday at his home and of

natural causes

.

Stockwell received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor for the comedy "Married to All," directed by

Jonathan Demme

("The Silence of the Lambs," 1991) and in which he shared credits with

Michelle Pfeiffer

and

Matthew Modine

.

With a long and varied career spanning seven decades, Stockwell collaborated with David Lynch on the films 'Dune' (1984) and 'Blue Velvet' (1986).

However, the actor worked for other geniuses of the big screen such as

Francis Ford Coppola

('Tucker: A man and his dream', 1988),

Wim Wenders

('Paris, Texas', 1984),

Robert Altman

(' The game of Hollywood '1992) or

Sidney Lumet

(' Long journey into the night ', 1962).

For this Lumet film, he shared the award for best actor at the Cannes Film Festival with his co-stars

Ralph Richardson

and

Jason Robards

.

It was not the only time that he triumphed collectively in the French competition, since with

Richard Fleischer's

'Compulsion' (1959) he

also won the best actor award.

On that occasion, Stockwell received the award alongside his fellow 'Compulsion'

Orson Welles and Bradford Dillman

.

Stockwell began his career in the theater as a child and also had a long and successful career on television, where he stood out with series such as 'Through time' (1989-1993) or 'Galactica, combat star' (2004-2009) .

Stockwell was a great friend of musician

Neil Young

and proof of this is that the actor designed the cover of his album 'American Stars' N Bars' (1977).
