While France and the whole world are fighting fiercely to eradicate the

Lagarosiphon major

, the municipality of Pont-du-Château (Puy-de-Dôme) has managed to get rid of it.

This particularly invasive aquatic plant had spread in the Boires pond and threatened to wipe out the flora and fauna, says

La Montagne

.

The presence of the plant native to South Africa was discovered by the Conservatory of Natural Areas (CEN) while it was preparing the management plan for the pond.

The

Lagarosiphon major

was reportedly released along with aquarium water.

15,000 euros spent by the town hall

Informed of the discovery of the exotic plant, the town hall of Pont-du-Château launched a vast operation.

The contaminated spaces were filled in after grubbing up and then the banks were reorganized.

The wetland was then replanted.

“With ten years of hindsight, we realize that it is a success.

The EEE (invasive alien species) has disappeared without spreading.

Better still, the white willow which settled spontaneously has recreated a rare environment of community interest ”, welcomed the Regional Directorate for the Environment, Planning and Housing (Dreal) and CEN Auvergne.
