Astronaut Thomas Pesquet, currently on a mission on the International Space Station (ISS), spoke with Emmanuel Macron on Thursday.

They notably discussed climate change and the damage suffered by the Earth.

The French president asked the astronaut if any traces of the climate change could be seen from space, reports

"Unfortunately yes, Mr. President," replied Thomas Pesquet.

“Through the window of the Space Station we can clearly see the fragility of the Earth, an oasis with limited resources, and the harmful effects of human activities.

"

Images we hate to see: the huge fires in Greece, Canada and California.

Unfortunately these are not the only areas affected and my heart goes out to those affected and those struggling to control the fires.

Accelerating phenomena

Thomas Pesquet notably described an acceleration of natural disasters, including tropical storms and forest fires.

Because even from space, the astronaut witnessed these fires: “We saw entire regions burning, Canada, California […], the flames that we could see with the naked eye 400 km away. attitude, same thing in the south of France and Greece.

"

Thomas Pesquet specified that all these phenomena had accelerated since his last stay on the ISS and hopes that measures will be taken "so that the planet remains habitable for everyone".

The President of the Republic agreed with him.

"We must accelerate the commitments and their implementation much more," said Emmanuel Macron.

 This is the objective of this COP26.
