Cuban artist
Tania Bruguera
(Havana, 1968) was for years the number one public enemy of art for Castroism.
His job consists of interpreting reality, its political and social failings, and raising a performative discourse that is both insubordinate and defiant.
His father belonged to the black leg of the revolution.
Bruguera had privileges, but he used them as part of his merchandise
against a regime that abolished any crack of criticism
.
And so he made his way.
Bruguera is today one of the Latin American creators with the most resonance and prestige, with work and actions displayed in some of the temples of contemporary art: from the MoMA in New York to the Tate Modern in London.

And to his journey he now adds the Velázquez Prize awarded by the Ministry of Culture, endowed with 100,000 euros. The jury of the award highlights "his
rigorous performative activism
and especially attentive to the sociopolitical contextual dynamics". Some of Bruguera's actions are part of the best anthology of artistic activism in recent decades. It has also been valued "His review of the modalities of the art of behavior that suppose a dynamic of participation and questioning of the traditional ways of behaving in the public space has been valued".
A firm defender of the intervention of art in society and its transformative power, her works focus on issues related to authority and control.
Her defense of freedom of expression through her performances or her protests has led her to direct confrontations with the established power on different occasions.
