The work of the 11th edition of the Publishers Conference, organized by the Sharjah Book Authority, in cooperation with the International Publishers Association, began yesterday at the Expo Center Sharjah over a period of three days, with the participation of 561 publishers and literary agents and 35 speakers from around the world.

The conference kicked off with a ceremony in which Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, President of the International Publishers Association, participated. Chairman of the Sharjah Book Authority Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, in a welcoming speech in which he indicated the keenness of the Emirate of Sharjah, through the annual conference, to provide everything necessary to support and advance the publishing sector.

Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi said: “As we celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the International Publishers Association this year, we affirm its pivotal role in supporting publishers around the world.”

She added: "In the International Publishers Association, we seek to consolidate cooperation and solidarity between all stakeholders, and to strengthen the links and relationships that bring them together, and this is what prompted the Union to work with partners to launch the global plan to enhance the sustainability and resilience of the publishing industry (Inspire)."

She continued, "More than 50 organizations and institutions specialized in the field of publishing have committed to cooperating to achieve the ten goals of the Inspire plan, and we hope to witness more organizations joining its charter during the Sharjah International Book Fair."

For his part, the Chairman of the Sharjah Book Authority, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, stressed in his speech during the conference that Sharjah has a rich development experience thanks to the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, explaining that this experience proved that ambitions are achieved. Cooperation, joint action, consensus on higher interests, and bridging gaps in coordination and planning.

Al-Amiri continued: “If the eradication of academic illiteracy is a breakthrough for nations in their path towards development, the eradication of knowledge illiteracy through reading, knowledge, skills development, conscience, and imagination is the basic guarantee for the continuity of this path, and the sustainability of the publishing sector becomes a path towards the sustainability of the world’s achievements to achieve common interests of humanity.

Facing the crisis

The activities of the first day witnessed a panel discussion entitled “Together Against the Crisis: The Role of the Publishing Sector’s Sustainability and Resiliency Plan (InSPIRe) in Supporting the Sector’s Recovery in Times of Crisis”, moderated by Karenni Pansa, Vice President of the International Publishers Association.
