Nocturnal disturbance of the peace and excessive consumption of alcohol are always a problem in Heidelberg's old town - now a nocturnal ban on the sale of alcohol is supposed to help.

"There is no other way to master the situation," said a city spokesman.

The background to this is that in Heidelberg for several weeks now, several hundred people - including those from the surrounding area - have been celebrating with ghetto blazers, hooting and consuming hard drinks.

The focus is on the old bridge over the Neckar.

All efforts to be more considerate would not have been fruitful with the 16 to early 20-year-olds.

The romantic old town with many bars and restaurants is a magnet for young people.

Nocturnal alcohol sales ban for "Spätis"

The city will shortly issue a corresponding general decree.

This does not affect the serving in pubs, clubs and outdoor restaurants, but rather the sale in so-called "Spätis".

These are kiosks that sell alcohol late into the night.

The times in which the proposed ban will apply have not yet been finalized.

The legal situation for the project is tricky after Baden-Württemberg's green-black state government abolished the general nocturnal ban on alcohol sales in 2017. In Heidelberg it is said that this does not rule out that cities could make use of it in explosive situations. "You just have to justify it well," said the spokesman. The city is concerned with draining the supply routes for hard liquor - especially vodka.

The Greens do not believe in the plans of the independent mayor Eckart Würzner.

As the largest group in the local council, they criticize the plans and demand more prevention.

Bans are not a permanent solution, the city has done too little in recent years to offer young people non-commercial meeting places.

There is a lack of youth social workers and street workers who can prevent escalations in advance.

Mayor Würzner, however, receives support from the CDU.
