China News Service, October 29. Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding released the "Notes on Giant Panda "Xing Rong" on the official WeChat" on the 29th, stating that in late April 2021, the giant panda "Xing Rong" suddenly became progressive. The clinical manifestations of loss of appetite, weight loss, abnormal gait and behavior, etc., have no obvious effect after conventional treatment.

In order to find out the cause, the veterinary team of the Panda Base promptly performed a series of examinations such as whole body imaging, histopathology, B-ultrasound, biopsy of space-occupying lesions, DR and CT after anesthesia, and the results showed dedifferentiation. Liposarcoma (malignant tumor).

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma is a highly malignant tumor. It is the world's first case in the captive history of giant pandas. There is no clinical treatment experience to learn from.

In order to save the life of "Xingrong", the Panda Base urgently invited a number of oncology, pathology, general surgery, and extra-osseous experts from the top three hospitals in the province to join the base team to conduct multidisciplinary joint consultations on the treatment plan.

After comprehensively assessing the body condition, the nature of the tumor, and the location of the tumor, the joint consultation expert team finally established that surgical removal of the tumor was the first choice for exploratory treatment, but emergency treatment plans such as massive bleeding must be formulated in advance.

In order to ensure a smooth operation, the veterinary team worked hard for 48 hours and finally selected 6 blood-matched donors from more than 20 healthy giant panda donors, and stored giant panda blood in advance.

On the morning of May 16, 2021, the expert group performed tumor ablation resection and hip joint reconstruction on "Xingrong". About 500 grams of tumor tissue was removed, and the operation lasted 4 hours.

Although the operation was very successful, postoperative care is still very difficult due to problems such as the risk of wound infection and the inability to take food voluntarily.

To this end, the panda base set up a post-operative care team to monitor her 24 hours a day.

More than 20 days later, the "Xing Rong" operation wound healed, the right hind limb could bear light weight, and the ability to eat liquid nutrient solution was intermittently improved. However, after adjusting the bamboo collocation and feeding methods several times, there was still no voluntary feeding behavior. .

At the beginning of September 2021, "Xingrong" suddenly consumed less and less liquid nutrient solution, and the overall condition of the body gradually deteriorated. Eventually, he died on September 27, 2021 due to multiple organ failure.

Anatomy after death revealed that the tumor had spread to the heart, lungs, kidneys and pleura, causing multiple organ damage.

Human medical literature studies have shown that dedifferentiated liposarcoma is a highly malignant tumor, mostly occurring in the retroperitoneum and pelvic cavity, and has a high local recurrence rate and distant metastasis rate.

The clinical symptoms are concealed, mostly manifested as painless lumps that gradually increase.

Because of its insensitivity to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, surgical resection is currently recognized as the main treatment method, but the prognosis is poor.

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding said that the departure of the giant panda "Xing Rong" made people who loved her feel sorry, and it also made the medical team guarding "Xing Rong" heartbroken day and night.

The diagnosis and treatment measures for this type of disease in the giant panda will be explored to better maintain the health of the giant panda population.

We are grateful for the warmth and joy that "Xing Rong" has brought to the world, and will always miss her.
