The Sauvé report and the various scandals that have erupted in recent years seem to have undermined the confidence of believers in their religious institutions.
According to an Ifop poll published this Thursday in
La Croix
, 66% of Catholics polled answered “no” to the question “Do you trust the Church on the protection of minors?
".
Note that these figures vary significantly depending on whether the respondents are non-practicing Catholics (76%) or practicing (45%).
Catholics also seem to reproach the Church for its attitude after the publication on October 5 of the Sauvé report which revealed that nearly 330,000 minors had been victims of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church since 1950. 80% say they are " favorable "to pay compensation to the victims and for 76%, the reaction of the Catholic hierarchy was not" at the height of these revelations ".
The latter figure drops to 49% among regular practitioners.
69% want to lift the secret of confession
The revelations about sexual violence in the Church have also sparked a wide debate even in political institutions on the issue of confidentiality of confession.
Monsignor de Moulins-Beaufort had affirmed before returning to his declaration that the secrecy of confession "imposed" on priests and was "stronger than the laws of the Republic".
Result: 69% of respondents want it to be lifted.
The results of the study finally show that 90% of the Catholics questioned say they are "in favor" of entrusting women with responsibilities and changing the institution's discourse on sexuality.

This survey was conducted from October 20 to 22 with 997 Catholics, taken from a sample of 1962 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over.
