British pop star Ed Sheeran announced this Sunday that he tested positive for Covid-19, less than a week before his new album goes on sale.

"A quick note to tell you that unfortunately I have tested positive for covid and that, therefore, I put myself in isolation," the composer and performer of the worldwide hit 'Shape of You' (2017) posted on his Instagram account.

"So I will not be able to fulfill my commitments in person at the moment, and I will do as many interviews as I can and scheduled performances from home," added the 30-year-old singer, who resides in Suffolk, eastern England.

His next album, "=", will be released on Friday, October 29, so the musician had several performances and interviews scheduled.

Ed Sheeran performed on October 17 in London at the Eartshot Climate Awards ceremony, hosted by Prince William.

The singer had taken a break after the birth of his daughter, in the summer of 2020.

The United Kingdom, one of the European countries hardest hit by the pandemic, with some 140,000 deaths, currently has one of the highest rates of infection in the world.

Although there are fewer hospitalizations and deaths than in previous waves, experts warn that they are increasing and some demand that certain restrictions be reimposed, such as the use of a mask indoors.

The government, for the time being, has declined to do so.
