"Let's defend motherhood", can we read on the banner of the demonstrators who gathered on Saturday in front of the Guingamp town hall in the Côtes-d'Armor.

Between 400 (according to France 3 Bretagne) and 600 (according to

Ouest France

) people came to protest against the closure of the maternity and surgical departments of the Breton city hospital.

The hospital risks being labeled "local hospital" at the beginning of next year.

This would result in the relocation of the two services to Lannion and Saint-Brieuc.

"The maternity ward of Guingamp is important and crucial", assures Philippe Le Goff, mayor of the city, to France 3. "And we know that it works since we had 80 more births in 2020".

This is not the first time that the maternity hospital has been threatened with closure.

Already in 2018, the Regional Health Agency announced a closure for early 2019. But after several protests and the change in government policy on obstetric gynecology services, the decision was finally abandoned.
