The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal surrounds Jiaxing City, forming a unique urban landscape of "the canal embraces the city and the eight waters converge", and also establishes Jiaxing's status as an ancient canal city of "left-hang-right-su, north-south thoroughfare".

Its network of river systems has remained unblocked so far, playing important roles in transportation, flood discharge, irrigation, and water conveyance. It is the "mother river" that nurtures Jiaxing.
