In Magnanville (Yvelines) the possible installation of a penitentiary center is debated.

The latter could accommodate 700 inmates and is part of the plan to build 15,000 prison places in ten years promised by the former Minister of Justice Nicole Belloubet in 2018. The project is now supported by the Keeper of the Seals, Eric Dupont Moretti, reports

However, the population finds it difficult to understand.

Many residents recall that the city was affected by an attack in 2016, with a couple of police officers murdered at his home.

Opponents fear "problems of incivility and insecurity", as well as a drop in the property rating of the town.

An online petition has already collected around 2,800 signatures.

Fear of the inhabitants

The Ministry of Justice published a press release on September 30 indicating that the mayor of Magnanville Michel Lebouc (DVG) understands “the issues requiring the construction” of the prison and welcoming “the sense of the general interest” of the city councilor and other elected officials.

The message triggered a strong reaction from opponents.

The mayor, for his part, assured that he had not given his consent.

After a meeting with the services of the ministry and the prefecture, he obtained an appointment with Eric Dupond-Moretti on October 1 and reportedly told him of his dissatisfaction.
