The Aso volcano erupted in Japan.

The volcano, located on the southern main island of Kyushu, spat ash around three and a half kilometers into the sky, as the Japanese weather service announced on Wednesday.

The authorities warned of lava flows and falling rocks within a radius of about one kilometer from the Nakadake crater.

There were initially no reports of damage or possible injuries.

The warning level for the volcano has been increased to level three from a total of five.

People were told not to approach the Aso.

The 1592 meter high mountain in Kumamoto Prefecture is a popular destination with tourists.

The last eruption of the Aso was in 2019, but it was a smaller eruption.
