At its heart, Succession is a classic straight-down TV soap from Falcon Crest or Dallas.

At the same time, it is one of the most refined produced after Mad Men.

The series is on the one hand a shocking insight into the lives of the incredibly rich and immoral, but perhaps mainly a story about abuse and how its waves can be felt for generations.

Here is the characters' position ahead of season three:

Roman

Just returned from a kidnapping drama, the playboy son was noticeably touched and wondered if the siblings might not be interested in talking "normally".

They were not, but Roman at least mustered the courage to tell the truth to his father: the billion-dollar deal that would take Waystar RoyCo out of the hands of shareholders would probably not get rid of.

Chance to succeed Logan: bigger than ever.

Roman matured late but noticeably.

He has Logan's ear now.

Siobhan

Shaken by her husband Tom's breakdown, she chose to sacrifice Kendall and in return was promised a "senior position" in the company by her father.

Quite far from the beginning of the season when she was appointed successor.

Shiv is smart and ruthless but has a little too good self-confidence for Logan's taste.

Chances to succeed Logan: small.

Logan has clearly shown that he does not want to.

At the same time, he has clearly shown that he wants to.

Tricky seat for the family's only sister.

Kendall

The season began with a humiliating press conference where a stuttering Kendall read inside from dad's papers and ended with an explosive press conference where he tore up the script and instead announced his ambition to destroy the old man.

To help him, he has cousin Greg's secret document.

Chances to succeed Logan: At the moment less than ever, despite the fact that Kendall is probably the one who would do the job best.

Tom

The married and constantly ignored Shiv's husband finally gathered the courage to tell the truth: he is not interested in triangles and open relationships.

He just wants to be with his wife.

In a defiant breakdown / suicide attempt, he took a piece of chicken from Logan's plate, smashed half of it, and put the rest back.

Chances to succeed Logan: Small but not non-existent.

No one takes Tom seriously, but maybe his new freaked out persona is exactly what is needed to take command of the company?

Greg

We do not know when or how, but that hale cousin chose team Kendall in the last episode and is probably on his way to destroy Waystar RoyCo and Logan together with this one.

That probably means his grumpy grandfather Ewan brought him back in his $ 250 million will and the future looks bright.

Chances to succeed Logan: Seriously.

Why not - in the end?

Greg is immune to Logan's worst sadism because he's not Logan's child.

But he is still family and demonstrably smart enough to maneuver on the highest peak.

Logan

For the first time, it was probably something similar pride we saw in the cruel Logan's face when he realized that his son, contrary to what he claimed, was actually a "killer".

The feeling is probably transient because the one Kendall is trying to murder is Logan himself.

Revenge is likely to be ruthless.

Connor

The eldest son had lost significant sums on the failed production of the theatrical production Sands - written by his employed mistress Willa.

Neither this, nor his father's disapproval, seems to slow down his ambitions to become President of the United States.

Stranger things have happened, and his followers - "Con-heads" - are loyal to his vision of a society without taxes.

Chances to succeed Logan: Microscopic.

Connor has no insight into the company and is considered by the others as a clown.

Not without reason.
