Between China and Taiwan, tensions are mounting with the record number of Chinese military aviation incursions into the island's air defense identification zone.
Beijing claims the territory as one of its provinces, and threatens its neighbor with invasion if it declares independence.
It is in this context that Senator Alain Richard, president of the France-Taiwan Friendship Group, visited Taiwan.
He met President Tsai Ing-wen, to whom he affirmed his support.
A visit disputed by China.
