Health and the autonomous communities meet again in the Interterritorial Health Council once

the evolution of the pandemic

has allowed the lifting of most of the

restrictions

and it is time to prepare the administration of the

third dose

of the vaccine to those over 70 years of age.

The meeting takes place when Spain has returned to the

low risk of transmission of the coronavirus,

for the first time since July 2020, and the healthcare pressure already registers a

clear downward trend:

the occupancy of the ucis is below 6% with 507 patients (5.5%) and hospital admissions are less than 2,000 (1,942), according to data from last Monday.

This evolution has allowed the relaxation of restrictions in culture, sports activities and in the hospitality industry.

The last case has been

Catalonia

, which this Tuesday announced that the vast majority of capacity limits were falling, which will return to 100% in activities and cultural spaces, outdoor sports facilities and equipment, bars and restaurants.

07.15 More than 11,000 people died during the fifth wave of Covid-19, triple the number officially registered by Health

A total of 11,442 people died between mid-July and mid-September during the worst weeks of the fifth wave of Covid-19, which is almost three times the number of victims officially registered by the Ministry of Health of the Government of Spain, which limits that to 4,355.

This is stated in a report, to which Servimedia has had access, prepared by four professors from the Polytechnic University who make up the team of 'Dynamic mathematical model to facilitate critical decisions calculating future consequences of actions carried out', coordinated by Rafael Cascón.

This group of engineers has analyzed the official data of deaths from coronavirus during the fifth wave and has compared it with the mortality records of the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in order to measure the excess mortality due to the pandemic with respect to other years.

The results show that, during the 9 weeks of highest mortality of the last fifth wave (from July 19 to September 19), there were 11,442 more deaths than usual on the same dates of the years prior to the pandemic, which represents a significant increase of 18%.

The deaths with Covid-19 diagnosed during the same period were 4,355, according to official data from the Ministry of Health directed by Carolina Darias. Therefore, experts recommend "it is convenient to investigate the causes of this high mortality" to check if they are directly due to "unidentified" coronavirus cases or if they are the result of "independent causes of the disease" to "try to remedy them if they recur" .

For them, it is not a coincidence because "the excess mortality relative to the population during this period in Spain has been significantly higher than in the rest of the countries of Europe" and they point out that the high number of deaths during the fifth wave in Summer may be derived from the "relaxation of measures in periods of stability" against Covid-19, such as "the withdrawal of the obligation of masks" in open spaces.

07.00 Swiss scientists find an effective antibody against all variants of covid

Scientists from the University Hospital of Lausanne and the Federal Polytechnic School of that Swiss city (EPFL) announced today the discovery of a monoclonal antibody capable of neutralizing all variants of covid-19, including delta.

The scientific finding, published in the specialized journal "Cell Reports", has been achieved by isolating lymphocytes from patients with covid-19.

The antibody is "one of the most potent so far identified against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus," EPFL said in a statement.

As he explained, the antibody blocks the spike proteins (which give the virus its characteristic "corona" shape) and thus prevents them from infecting lung cells, which stops the viral replication process and allows the patient's immune system to eliminate the coronavirus. of the body.

The scientists also assure that the new monoclonal antibody is more durable, since it provides protection for around six months, against three or four weeks for other antibodies.

"This makes it an interesting preventive treatment for unvaccinated individuals at risk, or for vaccinated people who have not been able to produce an immune response," said the Swiss university statement.

Immunocompromised patients, recipients of a transplanted organ or patients with certain types of cancer could be protected against the coronavirus by receiving injections of the discovered antibody two or three times a year, experts from EPFL predicted.

Clinical trials of a drug based on these antibodies will begin in late 2022.
