He was one of the greatest representatives of contemporary music in Spain.
Spanish composer Luis de Pablo died in Madrid on Sunday at the age of 91, the Spanish Ministry of Culture announced on Monday.
Born in 1930 in Bilbao, in the Spanish Basque Country, Luis de Pablo was considered one of the main figures of “Generation 51”, a group of composers who modernized Spanish music by integrating it into the European avant-garde.
Self-taught, he has composed over 300 works, according to the Society of Spanish Songwriters, and has been part of some of the most prominent groups in contemporary Spanish music, such as Tiempo de Música and Alea.
Music composer for films and operas
Many tributes were paid to him on social networks on Monday, in particular by personalities from the world of culture.
"Rest in peace", wrote the Spanish Minister of Culture, Miquel Iceta, on Twitter.
Author of “mobile” music giving the performer freedom of course, Luis de Pablo has also made a name for himself for his film scores, in particular for directors Victor Erice and Carlos Saura.
He was also the author of six operas, the last of which, “El Abrecartas”, will be performed in February at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
His career had been rewarded several times, in Spain and abroad.
He had thus received in France the medal of the Order of Arts and Letters, as well as an honorary Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2020.
