France bans plastic packaging of fruits and vegetables

France will ban plastic packaging for almost all fruits and vegetables from January 2022 in a bid to reduce plastic waste, the French environment ministry said on Monday.

The French government, in implementation of a law enacted in February 2020, published a list of 30 types of vegetables and fruits that must be sold without plastic packaging from the first day of the new year.

"We use a terrible amount of non-reusable plastic in our daily lives. The law aims to reduce the use of plastic of this type and promote its replacement with other reusable and recyclable materials in packaging operations," the ministry added in a statement.
