Is your white cat not listening to you?

Don't blame him too quickly, he might actually be deaf!

White cats with blue eyes have a 72% chance of being hard of hearing.

The cause: a congenital disease linked to a mutation in the gene determining the color of the fur.

This disease causes sound transmission defects between the ear and the brain.

If the cat's eyes are blue, the likelihood of it being affected by this mutation is greater: the blue iris is actually unpigmented, for the same reasons that the fur is white.
